Driver Education Grant Request
The goal of the Driver Education Grant Program is to provide financial assistance for foster youth to learn to drive.
Funding is allocated up to $450 per youth, per year on a first-come, first-serve basis. Note, while requests can be made by Caregivers and Social Workers the worker must approve for the youth to participate and verify that the youth will have access to a vehicle for the driving hours required for obtaining a driver’s license before the request can be approved.
Note: In Virginia, the following licensing requirements apply.
Drivers UNDER 18 years old:
Must complete state-approved driver education course before obtaining a license
Requires 45 hours of driving experience: 30 Daytime hours & 15 Night hours
Drivers 18 years and older:
Can apply for driver’s license if they have held a learner’s permit for at least 60 days OR have completed a state-approved driver education program

Driver Education Request
Tidewater Friends of Foster Care provides financial assistance for Driver Education for foster youth. Youth must be at least 15 yrs and 6 mos or older with permission of Social Worker. Youth under 18 yrs must obtain a Virginia learner’s permit and 45 hours of practice driving prior to obtaining a license. Behind-the-Wheel training is only offered after completion of in-class training. Submission of the referral form does not guarantee approval. TFFC reserves the right to deny any request. Training classes attended without approval will not be funded by TFFC.
