Tutoring

Through our Tutoring Program we aim to improve graduation rates among foster youth and help better prepare them for post-secondary education, so they have the skills required to support themselves as productive young adults.

We have contracted an exceptional group of highly qualified tutors, with the experience and training to work one-on-one with foster youth that need extra support to be successful in school. We work hard to ensure that our tutors remain paired with the children throughout the school year, so if they are moved from one foster home to another or are returned to their biological families, our tutors remain a constant source of academic support.

Since we started, Tidewater Friends of Foster Care has provided thousands of hours of tutoring to hundreds of Foster Youth with amazing success. Our objective is to meet the needs of as many school-aged foster youth as possible across Hampton Roads. Contact us to learn more.

Each year over Spring Break, TFFC and the Joe Lee Hansley Foundation take teens who are in our tutoring program to visit different college campuses. This was our 3rd annual trip. Year one was to DC and last year we visited South Carolina and Atlanta. This year we visited Pennsylvania to view the college campuses of Philadelphia. As well as getting a glimpse of what college life is like, they also sampled cheesesteaks, attended a Phillies game, and posed with the Rocky statue!

Each youth gave signed consent to appear in this video.
